About Hansi

Hansi is a famous historical city in Hissar district of Haryana state. It appears that the city was larger, more important and more prosperous than Hisar at one time. There are many ancient buildings of archeological importance in Hansi. Situated on the national Highway 10, the city is just 26 km away from Hisar.

History of Hansi

Hansi is an ancient city located in Haryana. While some documents like “Majkura Hansi” say that is was founded by ill daughter Hansivati/Ambavati of Prithvi Raj Chauhan, others describe King Anangpal Vihangpal Tomar founded it two centuries earlier for his guru “Hansakar”.The large hoard of Jaina bronzes, discovered accidentally in February in 1982, include idols of Gupta period and 7th-8th centuries. They were buried underground before the impending attack of Masud in 1037 CE. Hindu rule ended in Hansi, when Mohammed Gauri defeated Prithvi Raj Chauhan in 1192. From that period onwards, Hindus were not allowed to settle in Hansi. Later Shahjahan came to Hansi and met that the famous Hindu saint Jagannath Puri Samadha Hansi. Hindus were allowed to settle in Hansi after this incident. Hansi also had muslims and a few Jains.

In 1705, Guru Gobind Singh Ji came to Hansi an inspired Hindus to revolt against the oppressive Mughal rule. Veer Lakshmi Singh attacked Hansi and punished the muslims in 1707. Hansi was under the reign of Maratha in 1736. Ahmed Shah Abdali conquered the place after 3rd battle of Panipat in 1761. Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia took the control of Hansi for some years in 1780.
George Thomas, who was an Irish adventure become and independent king formed Hansi as his capital. In 1802, British East India Company took the rule of Hansi. Hansi had an active role in 1857 war of liberation. In 1947, when India and Pakistan was divied, many muslims including Ranghars an Syeds migrated to Pakistan from Hansi city.

Geography of Hansi

Hansi city in Hisar district of Haryana is situated at 29.1°N 75.97°E and has an average elevation of 207 metres. The place, geographically, is a semi-arid with an average rainfall of 46 cm.

Administration in Hansi

Hansi is one of the seven assembly constituencies in Hissar district of Haryana state and Renuka Bishnoi was elected as MLA of this seat in 2014. It falls under Hissar parliamentary constituency, one of the 10 Lok Sabha constituencies of Haryana. This parliamentary constituency includes Hisar district and parts of Bhiwani and Jind districts. Dushyant Chautala of Indian National Lok Dal is the sitting MP here.

Hansi Municipal Council

Hansi Muncipal Council is one of the 19 municipal councils in Haryana state. Just like all municipal councils in the country, Hansi municipal council is responsible for a long list of functions delegate to it by the state government. The main roles of municipal council are related to public health, public safety, regulatory functions, public infrastructure works and development activities. They are also respensible for water supply, sewerage, sanitation, birth registration, death certificate, street lighting, building regulations and many other. Besides the legally assigned tasks, the sector departments of the state government often assign various other functions such as family planning, slum development, nutrition, disease and epidemic control etc.

Tourist Attractions in Hansi

Hansi, once a prosperous city located in the Hisar district of Haryana state, is now a famous tourist destination with some ancient forts and historical monuments. It is the favorite destination for historians and archeologists. It is famous for five entry points, which are Delhi gate on the east, Hisar on the west, the Gosain gate in the north-west and the Barsi gate in the south and Umra gate on the south-west respectively. Durgah Char Qutub

Barsi Gate

Barsi gate, which was built by Alauddin Khilji in the year 1304 and is located towards the centre of Hansi Bazzar is the prominent among the five gates. It was built to protect the main fort from the attacks of enemies. Later Ibrahim Lodhi renovated it in 1522 by raising the height to over 30 m. various inscriptions in Persian language can be seen on the gate. Some of them date back to the period between 1304 and 1345.

Gujari Mahal

Gujari Mahal was built by Firoz Shah Tughlaq for his wife Gujari Rani. She was belonged to the Gujjar Community. It was believed that the king met and was impressed on a beautiful Gujjar girl and he proposed to marry her. Even though she accepted his request, she refused to accompany him to Delhi and wanted to stay back in Hansi for the fear that she might not be respected and honored equally like king’s other wives. So the king constructed a palace for her. Gujari Mahal, which stands on a high plinth, has underground chambers along with a baradari. The stones of Hindu palaces an temples destroyed by the Mughal rule were taken to build the palace. It has arches on three sides and a huge entrance gate on the fourth side. There are stone door frames on all the entrances. You can see nine bays on the roof of the main palace an each of them has a hemispherical dome decorated with paneling work in lime plaster. The exterior walls located above the arched openings are adorned with marvelously carved red sandstone brackets and different carved figures.

Dargah Char Qutub

Dargah Char Qutub is situated in the western side of Hansi city. It got the name from the four shrines in the city, which were erected in the memory of four Sulfi saints. There are tombs of Jamal-ud-din Hansvi, Qutubuddin Munawar, Burhan-ud-din and Nuruddin in the premises of the shrine and all the four saints were given the title of Qutub. This monument served as the final resting place of these saints. Earlier these tombs were near a small mosque. Later Firoz Shah Tughlaq turned it into a large mosque during his reign. You can also see the tomb of Mir Alam, the tomb of begum Skinner and the monument of Mir Tijarah, the chief purveyor of Sultan Hamid-ud-din of Hansi within this complex.

Asigarh Fort

The ancient fort in Hansi, Asigarh Fort, is believed to be built by Prithviraj Chauhan, the famous king of the Hindu Chauhan dynasty. The fort that is spread across an area of around 30 acres has a square shape. It has security posts in all the four corners. Firoz Shah Tuglaq, during his reign, constructed an underground tunnel that connects the present Hansi with Hansi. You can see figures of gods on the huge gates of the fort and images of goddesses, birds and animals on the walls of the fort. There are also some ancient statues of Jain Gods like Mahavira and Buddha in the open complex of the fort. The other attraction of the fort is the fifty seven Jain dolls made of Asthsdhatu. They were discovered during the excavations done in 1982. The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) declared it as the ‘Protected monument of national importance’ in 1937.

Hansi is very easily accessible from all corners of the country through road, rail an air ways. National Highway 10, State Highway 17 and State Highway 12 that pass through Hansi connect the city with all major cities like Hissar, Rohtak, Sulatanpur, Tosham, Bahadurgarh and Chatra etc. Haryana State Roa Transport conducts bus services from Delhi, Bahadurgarh, Rohtak and other important towns to Hansi. Hansi railway station, which is at a distance of 3 km from the city, is the nearest railway station. Belongs to the North-Western railways, this station is a broad guage. You get taxi/cabs or bus from the station to the city. Jitakheri at a distance of 12 km and Rohtak Jn at a distance of 71 km from Hansi are the other major railway stations near to the city. The important trains that pass through Hansi railway station are Jaipur-Hisar Passenger, Haryana Express, Rewari-Fazilka Passenger, Shri Ganganagar-Rewari, Kissan Express and Rewari-Bhatinda Passenger. All these trains have daily services. Hissar Airport, which about 22 km away from Hansi, is the nearest airport. The Indira Gandhi International airport at a distance of 150 km from the city is also depended by travellers.
